These days you can find cupcakes in a variety of hip and trendy flavors such as green tea cupcakes, champagne cupcakes, and caramel mocha cupcakes.  However, sometimes you get hit pretty hard by the wind of nostalgia and long for cupcakes featuring some of your favorite childhood treats. Take a look below at some of our most cherished flavors!

1.  Lemon Meringue – tart and bursting with flavor, lemon meringue is a treasured classic.  Turn it into a cupcake with a few of the right ingredients –  lemon zest and lemon curd (made of egg yolks, lemon zest, lemon juice, a heaping portion of sugar, and butter).  Combine the lemon zest, lemon juice, and vanilla flavoring into your batter and set your cupcakes to bake.  Once done and cooled, spread a generous dose of lemon curd onto the cupcake and top it off with fresh frosting.  Dress them in your favorite yellow cupcake wrappers!


2.  Peanut butter sandwiches – with jelly, banana, and everything in between – it doesn’t get much more nostalgic than that.  However, combine peanut butter with cupcakes (another childhood favorite of course!) and there you have a heavenly pair.  The trick to getting peanut butter cupcakes right is to make sure they are not dense, dry, or lacking in peanut butter flavor.  Add together equal amounts of creamy peanut butter and brown sugar for a deliciously moist cupcake. Then top with dark chocolate frosting and dressed in exotic Moroccan cupcake wrappers!

3.  Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes – Soft vanilla bean cupcakes frosted with sweet strawberry buttercream and topped with fresh strawberries is perfect to honor an old-fashioned classic.  Perfect for Mother’s Day!  We love cherry blossom cupcake wrappers or fuchsia filigree cupcake wrappers as the perfect compliment to these strawberry treats.

Fresh Ideas for Springtime Cupcakes

As we near the end of March, we can’t but help look forward to the spring season ahead. The frost is melting, the birds chirping, and the season’s first flower buds appear to bloom.  It’s also the best time to take advantage of seasonal fruits like lemons, strawberries, apricots, cherries, and oranges.  Enjoy fruits while they are in season to take advantage of maximum color and taste!  Below we’ve put together a few of our favorite springtime cupcake ideas as it’s time to bid adieu to winter and welcome in spring in all its glory!

1.  Lemon Cupcakes

Lemons peak from winter through late spring so now is the time to take advantage of a fresh burst of citrus flavor.  Use a vanilla cake batter as your base and once the cupcakes are baked and cooled, make a hole in the center to fill with fresh lemon curd (a soft, think and velvety cream) that is at once both tart and sweet.  You can make your own lemon curd using eggs, butter, sugar, and fresh lemon juice and lemon zest or go with store-bought curd – either is perfectly fine.  Top these cupcakes with a lemon-flavored whipped cream.  Use heavy whipping cream flavored with either lemon zest or lemon curd.  Finally, dress them up in your favorite yellow polka cupcake wrappers or yellow chevron cupcake wrappers.

2. Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes

There’s no better time of year to indulge in this spring favorite!  Soft vanilla bean cupcakes frosted with sweet strawberry buttercream and topped with fresh strawberries showcase a favorite spring berry in all its glory. Perfect for Easter or Mother’s Day!  We love cherry blossom cupcake wrappers or fuchsia filigree cupcake wrappers as the perfect compliment to these strawberry treats.

3. Blueberry Lemon Cupcakes

Here’s an excellent way to combine two fresh spring fruits together into one delicious cupcake. Combine all the dry ingredients for a white flour cake and add half a cup of fresh blueberries (for a yield of 24 cupcakes).  This will infuse the sweetly tart flavor of blueberries into a regular plain white cake. White cake works best with blueberries as it is mild in flavor.  Then top it with lemon cream cheese frosting for a scrumptious bite (this also works well with pancakes).

During these chilly winter months, we can’t help but dream ahead to summer.  And so looking for ways to infuse summer flavors into our winter days brings us to our number 7 pick for our top 10 inspirational cupcake ideas for 2013.

#7 Lemon Limoncello Cupcakes

The smell and taste of citrus instantly invokes summer memories.  If you’re like us and craving some summer sun right now, try a hand at baking these delectable lemon treats.  Lemon limoncello cupcakes are the perfect balance of sweet and tart.  With limoncello, an Italian lemon liqueur, becoming increasingly popular outside of Italy these days, it’s fairly easy to grab a bottle from your local wine shop or grocery store.

The base of this cupcake combines three levels of lemon-infused flavor – lemon zest, lemon juice, and limoncello.  Don’t be afraid to go big with lemon flavor because each level of lemon brings a different flavor dimension.  Coat them with a simple cream cheese frosting with a raspberry on top.

Lemon Curd Cupcakes: Fresh and Fun for Summer

Around our offices, we test a lot of cupcake flavors. We’re constantly looking for cupcakes worth of our designer cupcake wrappers. The cupcake has to have a good flavor and the right ‘look’ for our wrappers. We make and bake a lot of different cupcake recipes and we’ll admit sometimes they’re store bought. The frosting has to look perfect in order to be photographed for our photo shoots!

Our latest cupcake recipe that we tasted is the lemon curd cupcake. There are many different ways to decorate a lemon cupcake. These delicious lemon cupcakes that we made we made from a vanilla cupcake recipe with lemon curd inside. Ours weren’t as pretty as we originally intended so we won’t torture you with the photos but we will share with you ways to make and decorate a lemon cupcake!

Lemon Curd

If you bake a vanilla cupcake batter it leaves you wanting some sweet topping or flavor right? Well, with lemon curd your cupcakes have the perfect bite of sweet and tangy. Lemon curd is a custard light dessert made from eggs, sugar, lemon zest and butter. You can whip up the filling in your blender. Once you’ve made the lemon curd and it’s been refrigerated, each cupcake can have a spoonful of lemon curd.

Prep Work

Carve out a small cone in each cupcake. Then place a teaspoon of lemon curd inside each cupcake. Once you have a filled the cupcake with lemon filling if won’t need the top.  Whip up a batch up whipped cream frosting instead of using the lid. Whipped cream and buttercream both go well with lemon curd. Whipped cream is easier than buttercream but buttercream can be flavored with margarita! Lemon curd cupcakes with margarita buttercream frosting would be great for summer.

Cupcake Decorations

After you’ve put together your light and fluffy summer cupcake then you’ll need a cupcake wrapper. Ours might not have been worthy of these yellow cupcakes wrappers but yours will! A few different yellow cupcake wrappers will create a mono-chromatic yellow cupcake display. Complete the summer display with a cupcake stand, tissue paper pom poms and yellow tableware. More Cupcakes in a Jar: Banana Pudding & Strawberry Shortcake

A couple weeks ago we did a fun blog on cupcakes in a jar. A few fun cupcake blogs have really sparked our interest in cupcakes in a jar. These individual jars of sweets and goodies are great for lunches, picnics and snacks on the go. The plus side is you can fill them with any sort of delicious treat that you want. We’ve seen cupcakes, cakes and ice cream but now we’re seeing banana pudding and strawberry shortcake as well!

Strawberry shortcake is really a combination of light shortcake, whipped cream and strawberries. Putting them together in a small jar can be super easy. Simple, layer the shortcake, cream and strawberries to complete your own special combination; each perfect bite should have a fair amount of each. But it doesn’t stop there! Banana pudding is another easy treat. Here are the basic layers for a jar treat:

  1. Start with a crust of graham cracker or vanilla wafers. Crunch up the cookies to small bits. Line the bottom layer with lots of crumbs and chunks for a starting point. This would also be cupcake or cake if you want.
  2. Layer chocolate or whipped cream. The chocolate creates a sticky barrier for your graham cracker crust layer. You can mix chocolate and peanut butter for a flavorful layer. You don’t have to use both chocolate and whipped cream but it doesn’t hurt!
  3. Add a fruit layer or pudding layer. If you’re making banana pudding, combine pudding with cool whip to make a thicker pudding. Layer the pudding after the chocolate and then top with slices of banana. For strawberry shortcake, use cool whip with strawberries.
  4. Repeat the process for as many layers as you want. If you have heavy shortcake then you might only be able to add two layers. The number of layers you put together will depend on how large your mason jar is.

Mason jars come in a variety of size and shapes. Picking the right one depends on the occasion. Small cute jars are perfect for hostess gifts or school snacks. Large jars are good for multiple people or picnics.  If you’re having a party, cupcake jars or snacks in a jar are perfect single size party favors. Creating a cupcake in a jar is easy and you don’t even have to take them out of the cupcake liner. Some cupcake shops even serve frosted cupcakes in jars for easy carry out. How to Decorate Easter Cupcakes

Beach Themed Designer Cupcakes

Surf’s up! These gorgeous beach-inspired couture cupcakes in Emma designer cupcake wrappers were sent to us by Roni of Roni Sugar Creations. These cupcakes would be absolutely perfect for upcoming summer luaus, beach party celebrations, and destination weddings!

Roni, the owner of Roni Sugar Creations, used the Emma Designer Cupcake Wrappers to highlight the detailed sugar decorations, including surfboards, palm trees, flowers and starfish.
